We chat with award winning renewable energy company Boxergy

Can you tell us about the origins of your company and the key services you offer? How did you venture into the field of renewable energy, specifically battery energy storage systems?

At Boxergy, we began with the dream of accelerating the decarbonisation of home energy by making it cheaper, greener and smarter. We started to make renewable energy affordable for all because we knew people would adopt it faster once we worked out how to make it cheaper. Once we worked it out, we started to walk the walk by installing the solutions for real customers. This, of course, increased our knowledge and helped our customers save even more money and carbon. We have installed over 400 Heat Pumps and 500 Solar PV installations and have a fully-fledged service and maintenance department.

Please provide some information around the size
of company and your team?

We currently have 25 employees, including our research and development department, electricians, roofers, plumbers, and F-gas engineers.

In which geographical areas do you primarily operate, and what would you say are people’s attitudes, both home and commercial, to renewable energy?

We cover the whole of the UK now but cut our teeth in the central belt of Scotland for both Domestic and Commercial installations, including AlphaESS battery energy storage systems. Some people still need to be convinced about renewable energy, mainly due to cost and some of the false information on internet platforms. When we take our prospective customers through the renewable energy journey and provide them with the data we have gathered over the last 8 years, showing the potential savings and the positive impact on carbon emission reduction, they become more interested in discovering more.

Could you describe your typical customer? How do you tailor your services to meet the diverse needs of residential, commercial, and industrial clients?

Our customer database has begun to vary over the last couple of years. Our typical customer was aware of renewable energy, had done some research, and was interested in technology; their key driver was to decarbonise. However, we have noticed a shift and now see more people who want to save money.

As we treat every customer's needs individually, we aim to find out what will best suit their household, not only now but also future-proofing the system. With our knowledge and expertise in how all the technologies work together, we can advise customers on maximising their system and achieving the most efficient costs whilst maximising their savings.

What motivated your decision to partner with AlphaESS UK for battery energy storage solutions? How has this partnership enhanced the value you provide to your customers?

The main driver for partnering with AlphaESS UK is that we have found that they offer the best blend of quality, reliability, ease of use, and app functionality for our customers. Their service is also second to none; on the rare occasions we encounter a problem, they respond promptly to resolve the issue. Alpha also keeps us updated and included in the new product launches. Most of all, it is a partnership. We are there to support each other each step of the way. The products look great and perform well from a customer level, and the end-user app is easy to use.

From your experience, what sets AlphaESS products apart from other energy storage solutions in the market? Can you share a particularly interesting and successful installation story involving an AlphaESS system?

AlphaESS is the whole package. It is a premium brand, but not at premium prices. It looks great, performs well against its competitors, and is easy to use for customers. Its level of service is second to none, and even when we encounter a problem, the dedicated UK-based technical and customer care teams are available and responsive to ensure any potential issues are resolved effectively with as little disruption to the customer as possible.

We had a customer who already had solar with an AlphaESS B3+ battery system and was looking to upgrade their solar capacity. As they had already had a great experience with the B3, when we discussed what the new AlphaESS Smile G3 was capable of, they were amazed and jumped at the chance to upgrade to the new battery system. They are now enjoying over 20kwh of battery storage and a grid-free summer.

How do you stay informed about the latest developments in the energy sector, and how do these trends impact your business strategies and the solutions you offer?

We keep in touch through regular meetings with our suppliers and manufacturers, such as AlphaESS UK, attend renewable energy trade shows, and have our research and development team consistently explore the best solutions in the industry for our customers.

What advice would you give to someone considering integrating battery energy storage into their home or business? How do AlphaESS products facilitate this transition?

Adding in energy storage allows you to buy energy at the cheapest rates or store it from panels and use it at the most expensive times. AlphaESS systems make this easy with simple user interfaces, easy installation and competitive prices.

Can the UK hit its Net Zero targets? If you were energy minister for the UK, what would you be doing?

We won’t hit our targets if we keep doing what we have been. The best way to increase mass adoption of renewables is to:
1. Reduce the spark gap (the difference between the cost of gas) to about 2 to 1, the same level as Sweden. This will drive the adoption of both batteries and heat pumps.
2. Incentivise the installation of heat pumps, solar panels, and batteries by making cheap loans available to homeowners so they can afford to install them.
3. Making energy companies pay the same cost for exporting electricity as they are charging.

These changes will accelerate the decarbonisation of home energy and put consumers at the heart of the renewables revolution.

Looking ahead, how do you see renewable energy and battery energy storage evolving in the UK’s energy landscape? What are your company’s plans for growth and adaptation in this changing environment?

As the nation becomes more aware of the options available, we will see an increase in home battery storage; in fact, we think every home should have one! Batteries are like Solar PV, but they work just as well in the winter as they do in the summer! The more batteries installed, the less we need to reinforce the grid. We aim to make renewable energy affordable and available to all. We will continue to grow from friends with the idea of creating a national brand supporting consumers through innovation, service, maintenance, and installations.

What message would you like to give to other installers or companies considering a partnership with AlphaESS UK?

There are many manufacturers and suppliers in the marketplace, all with wide-ranging performance and price points, but in our experience, the only company fully invested in supporting their partners and helping them grow within the renewables sector is AlphaESS. With UK-based support from an experienced team who knows the renewables sector, AlphaESS UK stands above all other manufacturers.
