Empowering Keys Park Stadium with a Pioneering Approach to Renewable Energy Solutions
A European First for AlphaESS UK and Heatable
Supporting Keys Park Stadium in Walsall, home of the Hednesford Town Football Club (The Pitmen), this commercial project involved installing a 99.8 kW system comprising 227 REA Fusion2 440 W bi-facial panels and 96 kWh battery storage. The refurbished main grandstand of the stadium served as the location for this ambitious renewable energy initiative.
Long-term AlphaESS UK partners, Heatable, brought their renewable energy design expertise, providing a bespoke system to meet the specific energy demands of Keys Park Stadium. The stadium required a tailored solution with light energy usage during daylight hours and heavy consumption during evening events. The AlphaESS H50 managed 65 kW of the array's power while balancing the remaining 35 kW via a Solis G5 PV-only inverter. The structured design ensures that the stadium can operate efficiently during both peak and off-peak hours, reducing its reliance on the grid and delivering effective energy cost savings. The commitment of the Heatable and AlphaESS UK teams to work in close collaboration ensured we addressed the client's energy consumption with a future-proof solution in place. Additionally, the collective systems deliver long-term sustainability and backup energy power and demonstrate the advantages of renewable energy generation and battery energy storage in a commercial event environment.
AlphaESS UK and Heatable - Supporting Commercial Renewable Projects
Client: Hednesford Town Football Club, Keys Park Stadium, Walsall, UK.
After an initial discussion around solar only, the possibility of creating a sustainable future for the stadium during the refurbished main grandstand of the stadium served as the location for this ambitious renewable energy initiative.
Installed System:
Battery Storage: Alpha ESS H50 with 96 kWh capacity and an integrated 50 kW PCS.
Renewable Energy Generation: 99.8 kW solar array using 227 REA Fusion2 bi-facial HJT panels. The system is expected to produce an estimated annual output of 97,000 kWh.
Energy Data
Pre-installation consumption: Approximately 100,000 kWh per year.
Post-installation savings: Estimated at £20,000 annually.
Future consumption: Anticipated 45% increase due to stadium expansions, including a hybrid heated pitch and dedicated fan zones, showcasing the potential for further energy savings and revenue generation.
Widely recognised as a groundbreaking project, it also officially marks the launch of Heatable's commercial battery division, a key step in our collective mission with partners to deliver cutting-edge energy solutions. A huge thank you to AlphaESS UK for their continued support and to our dedicated installation partners who made this possible.

Client Enquiry and Initial Consultation
The client initially contacted Heatable for a quotation for only photovoltaic (PV) panels. During the site survey, Heatable proposed integrating battery storage to address the stadium's energy consumption pattern.
In a close partnership with the client, Heatable's design team modelled multiple configurations to agree on a 99 kW array paired with the Alpha H50 battery storage system. This successful collaboration optimised the solar array configuration and maximised storage power. To further enhance the project's benefits, Heatable also partnered with GridImp, an innovative smart grid energy management system powered by AI, providing solutions using the impHub, an AI-driven, fully automated energy solution for businesses that manage the day-to-day energy management decisions, connecting you to the UK smart grid.
Challenges and Solutions for Commercial Renewable Projects
Installing the AlphaESS H50 battery, a new product in the European market, presented a significant challenge. However, Heatable's team successfully overcame this with exceptional support from the technical team at AlphaESS UK during the design and installation phases, demonstrating their problem-solving skills. The team had to navigate the complexities of integrating a new product into the European market, including adapting to local regulations, compliance and ensuring the system's compatibility with the stadium's existing infrastructure., From the initial enquiry to the final installation, the project was successfully completed in four months, even accounting for an unfortunate delay in grid approval. This successful navigation of challenges showcases Heatable's commitment to delivering high-quality solutions, even in the face of adversity. This 50 kW air-cooled outdoor hybrid system suits small to medium businesses, supporting five units in grid-tied mode and 3 in off-grid mode. It features plug-and-play batteries, a DC-DC converter with STS, and remote monitoring for seamless installation and stable operation.
System Features and Benefits
Renewable Integration: The solar PV system's bi-facial panels maximise energy capture, delivering consistent output.
Interactive Monitoring: Both the portal and the display screen provide real-time, clear, and interactive data for the client.
Revenue Opportunities: Ancillary grid services through Grid Imp offer additional income streams.
